2nd Attempt: Day 277. A farewell. Tuesday 28th December 2010, 43.4km, Steps 40366 (12/28/2010)

We got up this morning and ran a good solid 8kms to our breakfast stop where a wonderful surprise awaited. Instead of D’s usual breakfast of fruit & yoghurt followed by eggs, D’s mum had cooked us bread and butter pudding made from croissants, Yummy! I think it was a bit of a treat as D’s folks are leaving us today to drive to Mackay so they can fly to Adelaide for D’s nanna’s funeral.
After breakfast we had a bit of a sad goodbye with D’s folks and D shed a few tears. I think D would just love to have gone with her folks and attended the funeral so she could say her goodbyes to her much loved nanna but it was just not possible. As you are all aware the “rules” of the continuous record do not allow for days off and as discussed yesterday a minimum of 20kms must be achieved within the 24hour period of each day. As we are in far north Queensland it was just impossible to fly to Adelaide and still achieved the requirements of the record. D’s nanna was very proud of what D is doing and she wouldn’t want her to stop due to her. Also there are thousands of people around Australia who lives have been affected by breast cancer who are all following D and me and want us to finish the run. I know D feels very responsible in her role as mentor to cancer patients and as an ambassador to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and with all this in mind as a team we decided that D would continue on with the run whilst D’s folks would attend the funeral.
After D’s folks left I decided that I would battle the heat and humidity today and forgo my comfortable spot in the air- conditioned car and be on the road with D so I could look after her as I know she was having a hard time with trying to keep going when her heart was somewhere else. We trotted along in silence for the rest of the day and D pulled up stumps at Guthalungra Rest Area. D sat down on the bench and sighed; I put my head in her lap and told her that I loved her; she smiled and scuffed my fur I guess no more needed to be said.
Running with you soon.
