2nd Attempt: Day 190. Meeting old and new friends and struggling through the heat. Saturday 2nd October 2010, 38km, Steps 48173  (10/2/2010)

D got off to a very late start this morning as she forgot to set her alarm and I was enjoying the air-conditioner so much that I didn’t wake up to wake her. The problem with this is we didn’t get on the road until 7am and the temperature was already up to 28 degrees.

An hour later as we ran up to the van for breakfast the temperature had already risen to over 30! But we really didn’t notice that too much as we were so excited to see Chooka the cook from Mataranka Station, where we visited last year and she was so excited to see us in return.  As we stood around talking the temperature really stared to rise and I had to remind D that we still had kms to do and it wasn’t getting any cooler! So we said quick goodbyes to Chooka and she reinvited us to stay again at the station on our way down towards Tennant Creek in a few weeks so we can all catch up then.
Once Chooka left D ate her breakfast quickly and than we continued running up the road, we were just coming towards the van when we saw a Harley Davidson on the side of the road, engine running but with no rider. D just couldn’t help herself she jumped on and pretended to ride this fine machine and was very tempted to drive off when Chuckles (the bike owner) tapped D on the shoulder D in her cheeky way just smiled and scooted down to let Chuckles on the pavilion seat. He smiled back and sat down where we got a great photo. Chuckles hadn’t abandoned his bike so D could randomly sit on it he was actually giving us a donation and signing the witness book, Thanks Chuckles.
D watched longingly at Chuckles as he rode away and she muttered dreamily to herself “the next time I go around Australia…” I started to wonder if they made Harley’s in Pink when I realised that my feet were very hot from standing still on the bitumen so I thought we better move on as the temperature was still rising.
We ran on till it was so hot and D just had to get off the road and when I look at the thermometer it read 44 degrees! Talk about frying ones paws! As we were only 20 kms from Adelaide River we decided to drive forward and drive back tomorrow to the mark so D could jump into a pool and cool down her core temperature. Thank God for air-con is all I can say. Night all.
Running with you soon.
