2nd Attempt: Day 189. Start of Breast Cancer Month and a welcomed welcome. Friday 1st October 2010, 39.5km, Steps 49871  (10/1/2010)

Today is the start of the most important month in D and my calendar year as the 1st of October marks the start of breast cancer month. It just seems fitting that in 3 days time, during this important month D and I will be reaching GPS co-coordinators:  S 12 52.139 E 131 08. 488 at the corner of Crater Lake Rd and the Stuart Hwy where Deborah ended her run last year.  At this point Deborah and I will become the 1st female and the 1st dog to run the ENTIRE distance around Australia.

D and I ran along in cooler temperatures this morning as the thermometer read 25 degrees at 5am instead of yesterday’s 26! I did think as I was running that 25 degrees is usually the maximum for a Tassie summers day, here it’s the night time temperatures. No wonder I am feeling the heat!

Today’s good news, just in time to celebrate the start of breast cancer month is that after months of D struggling, the pinch nerve in her right hip is improving and slowly the pins and needles in her right foot are abating.  It looks like the visit to the doctor last Friday has helped or just maybe finally the gods have listen to me and realised that D’s not going to stop on her quest to raise funds for Breast Cancer research and that finally on this special day to give her a break. What ever the reason she is moving better, well as good as one can move in this heat.

As the afternoon heat of 40 degrees set in we run into Hayes Creek and D decided that she couldn’t run anymore so maybe we would stay near here.  All of a sudden I had dejavu as I though back to last year when D hobbled into Hayes Creek with her broken feet and we weren’t allowed to stay because of me. What a different a year can make we were given a warm welcome in Hayes Creek, and were allowed to fundraise and stay, it more than makes up for last years experience here. The best thing was Hayes Creek has a pool and Deborah and the crew all went for a much need cool off (paw daddy, Alistair, is really feeling the heat as two days ago he was in Tassie and it was snowing) whilst I guarded the fort in air- conditioned comfort.

Running with you soon.
