2nd Attempt: Day 113. Knee issues and the power of peas. Saturday 17th July 2010, 58km, Steps 66289  (7/17/2010)

It was a drizzly start to our 17th week on the road but luckily the rain didn’t last long and by mid morning the weather had cleared. At morning tea crew member Merienne performed some roadside surgery; by removing the stitches on D’s knee I do hope she was surgical clean?

Unfortunately over the last few weeks as D has started to push up the kilometres her knee has been a little sore and when I asked her about it she told me that it has been bothering her ever since the her fall 2 weeks ago. I gave her a very stern look and told her to strap it up immediately and of course, it helped. Sometimes it is very frustrating being D’s support crew as she just keeps plodding on and never tells anyone when she has any problems. I guess that is why she could run over 850 kilometres during our first half around Oz on broken feet she just doesn’t register pain like normal people or she is just too stubborn to stop!
With the knee feeling better we pushed on in silence until about midafternoon when a car pulled over to say hello. It was a couple D had met on the first attempt from Lawrence in NSW: “Hey Deborah you’re going the wrong way?” they said. D then had to explain our broken feet story, the end of the first half in Darwin etc. They were so inspired by D’s courage to go out again and to not use the whole broken feet as an excuse to not finish what she had started that they gave us another very generous donation, offered to do a fundraising function when D was in Lawrence and wished her all the best this time around.
Feeling very happy that another function will be organised on the East Coast, as we rely on people to help us help others D and I ran onto the green 60km till Billabong Roadhouse sign. Sometimes in the more remove parts of Australia it takes days to run from Roadhouse to Roadhouse or town, so D always makes sure that she stops at a place that could be easily recognized by anyone who would want to check the recording for the record. Therefore D stops at designated Roadside stops, green distance signs or station entrances which give her a marker and GPS coordinates for each start and finish running points for the day. Luckily there was a really nice flat area off the road for us to camp the night and crew member Merienne cooked dinner which D ate whilst juggling a bag of frozen peas on her knee. Never underestimate the power of a good packet of frozen peas to help with knee problems.
Running with you soon.
