2nd Attempt: Day 104. Running to find a camp. Thursday 8th July 2010, 55.5km, Steps 66493 (7/8/2010)

Today we started with head winds and by mid morning clouds had moved in and filled the sky and then the rain came down and down and down. That was it for me I was in the truck before you can say VIP bikkies. Unfortunately D had to run on in the rain all day and by the time dusk started D was soaked through and wanted to get off the road but we couldn’t find a place to camp. As the dark settled in and the rain continued she had to run in front of the van lights as we searched in vain for a spot to pull over. The problem was that in WA the red dirt of the land turns into butter when it gets wet making it impossible to just pulling over onto the side of the road which is what we would do in the dry. As D ran on we pasted many a side dirt road that if dry would be okay to camp but due to the heavy rains we would have got bogged. I did think that it was a good thing we are running on bitumen for our journey as you really couldn’t run on the dirt roads in the wet. We finally found a gravel pit at the turn off to Cooljarloo mine where it was safe to camp for the night without the fear of waking in the morning up to our axles in water. D stepped into the van, stripped off her wet clothes and climbed into bed to get warm and before we knew it she was asleep. I quietly woke her for dinner which she dutifully ate that was back in bed for more rest. It was a hard day and I was proud she pushed on to make her daily kms.

Running with you soon.
