Burning and Mourning. Day 211, 34.6km  (5/23/2009)

We set out this morning over undulating countryside with a beautiful sunrise as our back drop. D’s ankle is still playing up so we had a slow start to the day but her pain hasn’t affected her spirit which was in good form this morning as she joked with me up the highway. After breakfast D’s folks drove into Katherine to do some more fundraising whilst we ran on. At morning tea time a car pulled up and a young family got out and came over to meet us, luckily for me the kids were dog friendly. This family had decided to take six months off and travel around Australia, I can sure relate to that! We discussed what a great thing it is to do and how lucky we are to be able to travel around this fabulous country and I mentioned a few places that I thought they might like to visit during their travels.  As we ran towards the end of the day we were running in an area close to small stop bushfires, up here in the Northern Territory they do a lot of burning off in the dry season, the NT government policy is to burn off the dry 6ft high Savannah grasses to help prevent massive grass bushfires if it is left uncleared. The only problem with that is we couldn’t find a safe place to camp for the night as both sides of the road were burning, this meant D had to hobbling along until we eventually found a safe spot very close to the road about 25kms south of Katherine. It was a very sad night for D and the Running Pink team as they received the news today that a very close friend of the family had passed away. Bon Voyage Jack Wicker and love to all your family and friend at this time of mourning.
Running with you soon
