Practicing running. Day 58, 55.2km (12/21/2008)

You would think that after 2500 kilometres D would know how to run by now but today she spent the day practicing to run in a different style. The reason for this is Deborah runs with a very small gate; this means that she has a small stride length. As a runner with a small gate she is using up more energy and covers a shorter distance than someone with a bigger stride length. It’s quite a strange thing as when Deborah race walks her stride length is much larger than her running stride. So today Deborah spent the day trying a different approach to her running by trying to extend her stride length whilst running. The reason for this conscious effort is Deborah is trying to improve her running, distance covered and time because by the time she reaches the desert plains of the Barkley, NT, Pilbara etc she needs to run on average about 70 kilometres a day to get the world record. Thus the time spent now to make improvements with her running. My only objection to this is she is trying out different running paces, styles etc in the mountainous areas of the far east corner of Victoria where the Snowy Mountain Ranges meets the sea. It makes more sense to me to try to improve one’s running on the flat, less work, energy and easier but D said that it was important to practice lengthen her stride whilst going up hills as she has a natural tendency to shorter her stride even more on an incline. I guess that makes sense but it all looked like far too hard work to me but she did cover a good distance in good time today, so it must be working. Keep up the hard work D. We are spending the night in front of the Cabbage Tree Creek General Store where the kind owners have allowed us to plug into electricity and use their facilities. People’s kindness never ceases to amaze me. People are almost as nice as dogs.

Running with you soon.
